Make no mistake, Waterloo Region is no Toronto. We might not have the high-rise buildings, thousands of restaurants or the professional sports team students crave. However, this doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do. Waterloo is home to a wide variety of activities throughout the summer, just without the Toronto flair. Let’s take a look at a couple of them here:
Solstice Sampling
We hope you’re hungry. Solstice sampling, taking place June 16th, 5:00-9:00 pm, aims to satisfy just that. Offering samples of countless restaurants and local favourites, Solstice Sampling offers everything from deserts, to roast beef, to appetizers.
Be warned, this is not the partying scene. If you’re in the mood to get a little rowdy you should probably go elsewhere.

Canada Day Celebration
The University of Waterloo each year puts on a fantastic Canada Day display. Offering everything from bouncy castles for kids, food trucks, and even a beer garden, UoW is definitely the place to be in Waterloo each and every Canada Day. However, the events wrap up while the sun is still out, so don’t count on UoW to provide entertainment long into the night.
Still in the mood to do something? Columbia Lake in close proximity to the University of Waterloo (and Rez-One), offers an awesome display of fireworks. Costing more than $200,000 per year to put this show on, it consists of over 1500 individual fireworks that are let off over the lake.

Busker Carnival
Modelled after Buskerfest taking place in Toronto, Busker Carnival offers everything from the weird to whacky, to flat out awesome. Featuring Buskers from all over the region, they pack the Waterloo streets each and every summer. If you’re in the mood for something different, Busker Carnival is the place for you.

Riverfest
Just outside of Waterloo features the regions favourite escape. Elora is a quant little town home to the Elora Gorge, Elora Quary, and some of the best fall pics that you can take. However, each summer Elora is also home to Riverfest. Taking place August 17th, 18th, and 19th, Riverfest features some of Ontario’s hottest musical acts, with this summer, country music superstars Blue Rodeo closing it out.
